It is very hard for most of them to survive and most of the time, statistics have shown that even if a person with AS is fortunate to find themselves employed in today's economy, it is just as hard to remain employed due to miscommunication, missing social cues and simply not having a good grasp of the Neurotypical workplace.

As a NT who is in middle management in the workforce, I see much of what Barbara talks about in her book almost everyday. There are hidden messages and people talk "code" all around me everyday. It is up to me to actually figure out what people are truly saying to me and what they truly mean. I receive communication from my peers, co-workers and customers as quickly as the wingspeed of a hummingbird daily from many different sources, usually all at the same time: in person, by phone, by email, by blackberry and by intercom. It is a lot to deal with even for the most outgoing and social employee so imagine how it must feel to someone with AS. While there are many wonderful suggestions, examples and advice in this book that I feel is a "must read", I think Barbara's goal of this book is well spoken from this excerpt from her book:

"Every job requires some form of communication with other people..........The expression that you only get one chance to make a first impression is true. Research has shown that most people begin forming opinions about others within the first 30 seconds of meeting. Once an opinion is formed, it is usually hard to change. The impression that you make during the first days and weeks in a new job will be lasting. In addition to being evaluated on your ability to perform the job, you are being evaluated on whether you "fit in" to the organization."

If you or someone you love has AS and they are looking for assistance in how to navigate the NT employment world, this is an excellent resource. You can read more about Barbara and this book at her website: http://www.forwardmotion.info/book2.html

************* Spring FundRaiser *****************

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The need for community awareness will become more evident in the years to come as we try to meet the growing demands for employment and housing issues for our young adults and adults in North Alabama.

A special thank you to Angela Collier who is an Advocate/Consultant/Service Provider in North Alabama for bringing the attention of Aspergers Syndrome to both Mayors with this proclamation. To all who came out to support this effort, Asperger Connection would like to thank you for your time and dedication to making a difference in the lives of those with AS.

Asperger Connection Grant Received From CAS CARES, Inc.

Asperger Connection, North Alabama Division, has received a grant from CAS CARES, Inc. Flower Power will ship to anywhere in the United States for a flat rate of $5. Our friends at Little Professor Book Center and Cafe in Homewood have agreed to extend the Book Fair...indefinitely! And thanks in advance for continuing to participate!!!

So that we can reach our goal of $1000, we're inviting friends of Asperger Connection to make all of your book purchases in the months to come at Little Professor Book Center. Remember to mention the book fair when checking out so that Asperger Connection can benefit from your purchase. 20% of your purchase amount will go towards programs like our job placement and mentoring programs.

Some of our readers may know that Little Professor has been one of our first supporters of our job placement program, proving jobs for adults and high school age children with AS. Many thanks to the first few supporters of our online fundraiser, the $5 Facebook Campaign. Because of you, we are already on our way to meeting our goal for fundraising this summer. In just a few days, we've raised over $300! Wow!

We still have $1200 more fundraising dollars to drum up. If this week sets the tone, Asperger Connection will have raised enough by August 1st to see our mentoring program come to life! Imagine that!

No gift, no matter the size, goes unrecognized. Every gift matters to those children and adults who need funding for services in our community. The $5 Facebook Campaign has been set up so that small gifts can add up quickly. We are asking everyone to donate $5 online at http://www.firstgiving.com/aspergerservices?ref=facebook&type=app. Think about how you will spend $5 today -- you probably cannot even get lunch for $5 anymore. However, $5 would make the world of a difference to our organization. If enough people donate $5, we will be able to fund a year's worth of services to those with High Functioning Autism (HFA) and Asperger Syndrome (AS) right here in our community.

It's true, Dream Team--your enthusiam for this mission is contagious! Share YOUR story and your dream with your Facebook friends and your extended online family, and watch the benefit blossom!

Who Are You Searching For?

Remember, it's easy to support Asperger Connection just by searching the web. Along with our new name, we've got fresh and exciting fundraising plans for the summer!

On Friday and Saturday, July 24-25th, Asperger Connection proudly partners with Little Professor Book Center in Homewood for our Book Fair fundraiser, featuring over 250 books on Asperger Syndome and Autism! Asperger Connection receives 20% of the proceeds from the purchase of any book, store-wide on these two days only. Little Professor is a locally-owned book store and cafe, offering all of the books on your summer and back-to-school book lists. Watch the blog for a sneak preview of the featured book list, and let us know what you think. Read on to find out how to get a $5 coupon to the book fair! Come visit the book store during their store hours.

As a part of our Facebook Campaign to raise awareness, Asperger Services is gearing up for an online fundraiser! Watch your e-mail inbox for exciting updates as we work to reach our online fundraising goal of $1500 by August 1st. Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support our fundraising efforts. We are so appreciative of your support, and we realize that every bit helps. We don't want to ask for too much, that is why we are asking for "a little bit from a lot of people." So, share the link and the news about what your contributions are funding:

(1) Development of an internship program for high school students with AS by Summer 2010
(2) Supported opportunities for generalization of social skills interactions in "real world" environments for elementary and middle school students with AS by Spring 2010
(3) Young adult social group for young adults with AS by Fall 2009
(4) Mentor programs for children with AS by Spring 2010

To keep the momentum going later this summer, we'll learn more about our 5% Whole Foods Day!
